PERIODONTAL

PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for your upcoming surgery. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any last minute questions. We can be reached at Partners In Periodontics Phone Number970.669.7300 during regular business hours.

It may be important to stop taking aspirin and non-steroidal medications such as Motrin and Advil, 7-10 days prior to your surgery. If you are taking Coumadin or another blood thinner, remember to discontinue them as directed by your physician in consultation with Dr. Riggs. If you take antibiotic premedication, please take it as directed before your surgery. You will feel better if you have eaten a small, healthy meal prior to surgery, but you cannot eat for 10 hours prior to any IV sedation treatment. You may bring your iPod or MP3 player with you if you like.

In order to evaluate your progress and healing, we will see you for post-operative checks during the first 1-5 weeks. In most cases, after surgery or root planing and scaling, we will continue to provide ongoing supportive periodontal therapy to maintain the progress you have made and prevent relapse.

ANTIBIOTICS

Please alert the office to any allergies or sensitivities that you might have to antibiotics. You will be prescribed an antibiotic if Dr. Riggs determines it to be necessary. Take as directed until gone. It is advisable not to take these medications on an empty stomach, as nausea may result. For women taking birth control pills, be advised that antibiotics may interfere with their effectiveness.

SEDATIVES

If you elect to use an oral sedative you must complete your pre-operative paperwork in the office 1 week prior to your appointment, and you will need to have a ride to and from the office. If you are planning to be treated with intravenous (IV) sedation, you must also have an escort take you home. Dr. Riggs strongly suggest that patients sedated with oral or IV medications be closely monitored at home for 4-6 hours after surgery.
